In the heart of Montgomery County, where families gathered seeking both faith and fellowship, there stood a man whose presence was as steady as the roots of an ancient oak. Br. Magdi Hassanein never sought the spotlight, yet his quiet strength became the foundation upon which the Islamic Society of Germantown (ISG) was built and nurtured.
As Chairman of the Board of Trustees, he carried responsibilities that might have overwhelmed others. But Magdi bore them with humility, his warmth softening the edges of bureaucracy and his sincerity guiding every decision. When ISG faced its most critical stages—land preparation, county approvals, and the maze of planning documents—it was his name that appeared on the filings. Not for recognition, but because he believed true service meant stepping forward when others hesitated.
Community members remember his patience in county offices, his respectful voice in interfaith gatherings, and the dignity with which he represented ISG. To Montgomery County’s civic and interfaith networks, he was the approachable face of Germantown’s Muslim community—steady, respectful, and always present.
He lived modestly, never seeking applause. Yet the families who found belonging at ISG, the children who grew up in its classrooms, and the neighbors who saw its doors open wide all carry the imprint of his dedication. His passing left a silence felt not only in Germantown but across Montgomery County—a silence filled with gratitude, prayers, and tender memories of a man who gave more than he ever took.
And so, his story endures. Not in monuments or titles, but in the living community he helped nurture. His legacy whispers in every prayer recited at ISG, every child who learns Qur’an there, and every neighbor who feels welcome within its walls.

Yet beyond his public service, Magdi’s greatest pride and joy was his family. He was a deeply loving husband, father, and grandfather whose gentleness shaped the lives around him. He is survived by his devoted wife, Sr. Mabrouka (Mimi) Hassanein, and their children: Hwaida Hassanein, Hebba Hassanein, and Yehia Hassanein (ISB Executive Director). He was also the beloved father-in-law of Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim, Dr. Tarek El Sharif, and Hoda Fahmy, and the cherished grandfather of fifteen grandchildren—a source of endless joy and blessing in his life.
His passing leaves a void felt deeply in the halls of ISG, in community meetings, in family gatherings, and in the hearts of all who were touched by his compassion and guidance. The community mourns together, united in remembrance of a man who worked quietly, served faithfully, and inspired others through his character more than his words.
