The Book

This book is a memoir and history hybrid: 101 short stories of different people. It serves as both a historical record and a deeply human narrative of Muslim life in Maryland.

Maryland’s story cannot be told without the men and women of every faith who came here seeking opportunity and community. One strand of that story — Muslim life in Maryland — has remained hidden in fragments: whispered memories of elders, forgotten photographs in basements, letters tucked in shoeboxes. This book gathers those fragments before they vanish.

It begins in the 1700s with enslaved Africans who carried Islam across the Atlantic, and runs to the students, shopkeepers, imams and organizers building the community today.
