About MCM
Muslim Citizens of Maryland brings together Muslims from every profession and background across the state — entrepreneurs, academics, doctors, teachers, activists and neighbors — to work for fair representation in public policy and economic life at local, state and national levels.
We are a forum, not a building. What holds us together is continuous charity, volunteering, and public service.
Inside the book
This is not a history of dates and institutions. It is a memoir as much as a record — the fathers who worked long shifts to fund the first mosque, the mothers who taught Qur'an in living rooms, the students who formed the first MSA chapters, the elders who carried memories no one thought to write down.
The community here was never one thing. African Muslims whose faith survived slavery. Syrian and Lebanese merchants who opened shops in Baltimore at the turn of the last century. African American Muslims who found dignity and purpose in Islam. Families from Pakistan, India, Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan and Palestine who carried their hopes into this soil.

Shining Threads preserves the inspiring stories of more than one hundred pioneers, educators, imams, physicians, volunteers, civic leaders, and community builders whose sacrifices helped establish a lasting Muslim presence across Maryland. Some led from the front; many served quietly, seeking neither recognition nor reward.
