The Surgeon with a Global Heart: Dr. Mohammed Riaz Gheba

Dr. Mohammed Riaz Gheba’s story is one of healing hands and a boundless heart. Trained at King Edward Medical College / University of the Punjab in the early 1970s, he laid the foundation for a lifelong career in surgery. His skills were sharpened during his General Surgery residency at MedStar Health in 1980, and he went on to specialize in General and Vascular Surgery. Over the years, he became affiliated with some of the nation’s leading institutions, including Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center in Columbia, Maryland and the Johns Hopkins Health System. His dedication was formally recognized when he was inducted into the American College of Surgeons in 1998.

But beyond the operating room, Dr. Gheba’s vision of healing extended far beyond clinical walls.

A Voice for Justice and Humanity

Dr. Gheba has been a lifelong advocate for the Palestinian cause, never shying away from speaking for the oppressed. His support was not limited to words—he actively contributed financially to humanitarian efforts, ensuring aid reached the families most in need.

In the 1990s, during the Bosnian war (1992–1995), when hundreds of families fled the atrocities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Dr. Gheba emerged as a pillar of support. He organized relief efforts for the refugees who arrived in the United States, personally ensuring that hundreds of Bosnian families found stability, care, and dignity in their new homes. Many of those families, once strangers, became part of his lifelong circle of friendship and kinship.

Service at Home and Abroad

Closer to home in Maryland, Dr. Gheba has been a steadfast supporter of the Islamic Society of Baltimore (ISB) and Dar al-Taqwa (DAT). His presence has always been more than financial; it has been a moral commitment to seeing the Muslim community thrive. Those who worked alongside him describe him as a caring, passionate surgeon—someone whose warmth in personal life matched his precision in professional practice.

Support for Justice in Pakistan

Dr. Gheba also stands firm on issues of political justice in his native Pakistan. He is a supporter of Imran Khan, Pakistan’s former Prime Minister, and believes Khan has been unfairly and unjustly jailed and kept out of power. Dr. Gheba uses his platform and his voice to call for a fair, transparent, and open trial and continues to advocate for the freedom of Imran Khan and the restoration of democratic rights in Pakistan.

3ewA Legacy of Compassion and Conviction

Through surgery, advocacy, political conscience, and unrelenting compassion, Dr. Gheba has saved more than lives; he has restored dignity, built bridges of trust, and left a legacy of care that continues to ripple across borders.

In years to come, people will speak of Dr. Gheba as a gifted and dedicated surgeon. More importantly, they’ll remember him as one whose love broke borders—whose faith, patriotism, and humanity converged in service to oppressed people everywhere. He taught us that true patriotism is not turning our eyes inward, but reaching outward; that a healer’s duty extends beyond the body to the dignity of souls; that a heart bound by justice is a heart truly free.

And so long as someone somewhere suffers, Dr. Gheba’s story continues—one of healing hands, unfaltering courage, and a boundless, global love.
