Dr. Ibrahim Bijli Syed’s life reflects a gentle union of learning, faith, and service. Born on March 16, 1939, in Bellary, Karnataka, India, he rose from modest circumstances through discipline and a deep love of knowledge. He earned degrees in physics, chemistry, mathematics, and nuclear physics from the University of Mysore before completing specialized training in radiological physics at the Bhabha Atomic Research Center.
After serving as a medical physicist at Victoria Hospital in Bangalore, Dr. Syed immigrated to Halifax, Canada, in 1967 and became chief physicist at Halifax Infirmary. In 1969, he moved to Baltimore with his wife, Sajida Begum Shariff, and their two children, Mubin and Zafrin. At Johns Hopkins University, he pursued advanced studies and earned a Doctor of Science degree in radiological sciences in 1972.
His arrival coincided with the formative years of the Islamic Society of Baltimore. According to community records and founding-era testimony, Dr. Syed served as ISB’s first secretary from 1969 until his departure for Massachusetts in 1973. At a time when the community had no permanent masjid, he joined the small circle of families and professionals who organized prayers, religious education, meetings, and the essential administrative work of a growing institution.
Although his years in Baltimore were brief, his affection for the community endured. He remained in contact with Dr. Mohammed Ansar Ahmed Shami and returned to visit ISB in 1995—a quiet reconnection with the community whose earliest chapter he had helped write.
Dr. Syed later established his professional life in Louisville, Kentucky. He served as a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Louisville School of Medicine and as a professor of nuclear medicine. His work in medical physics, nuclear imaging, radiation protection, and health physics contributed to the advancement of medical knowledge and patient safety.
Beside him stood Sajida, an accomplished scientist in her own right. She held a master’s degree in zoology, worked in oncology research at the University of Maryland, and later became a certified senior cytogenetics technologist in Louisville. Together, they raised two physicians: Dr. Mubin Syed, an interventional radiologist and neuroradiologist, and Dr. Zafrin Syed, a psychiatrist. Their nearly fifty-nine-year marriage reflected shared learning, family devotion, and compassionate service. Sajida passed away in 2023.
Dr. Syed’s commitment extended well beyond the laboratory and classroom. He founded the Islamic Research Foundation International, wrote extensively about Islam, science, health, and education, and authored Intellectual Achievements of Muslims, Qur’anic Inspirations, and Knowledge Empowers You. He also served as a lecturer, khatib, interfaith participant, and volunteer Muslim chaplain.
His journey beautifully reflects Allah’s promise:

Soft-spoken yet intellectually courageous, Dr. Syed encouraged critical thinking, sincere inquiry, and responsible use of knowledge. His life offers a loving reminder that education reaches its highest purpose when it benefits others. From Bellary to Halifax, Baltimore, and Louisville, he carried that principle quietly serving his profession, supporting his family, strengthening Muslim institutions, and working for the good of humanity.
