Syed Abid Husain is a Maryland-based author, community historian, educator, and civic advocate dedicated to preserving the history of Muslim communities across the state. For several decades, he has documented the experiences of pioneers, immigrant families, faith leaders, educators, volunteers, and community builders whose sacrifices helped establish Maryland’s masajid, schools, organizations, and civic institutions.
He served the Islamic Society of Baltimore (ISB) for years as a council member and administrator during significant periods of institutional growth. This service provided firsthand insight into the difficult decisions, personal sacrifices, and collective efforts that shaped ISB’s development.
His administrative responsibilities also included the challenging period surrounding September 11, 2001, when Muslim institutions faced heightened scrutiny, public misunderstanding, and changing community needs. That experience reinforced his belief in thoughtful leadership, responsible communication, civic engagement, and building relationships beyond the Muslim community.
