A Father’s Devotion
At the foundation of this story is Haji Sahib, a man of simple but profound devotion. He was not just a senior citizen in the community but a shepherd of faith, embodying humility and dedication that left an imprint on all who knew him.

The Journey of Tufail Chaudhry
Inspired by his father’s (Haji Sahib) quiet leadership, Tufail Chaudhry carved his own path. He earned a Master of Science (MSc) and an MBA from Johns Hopkins University, using his education not only for personal growth but also to give back.
For more than 45 years, Tufail devoted himself to the Bon Secours Health System — a remarkable testimony of loyalty, professionalism, and care. His commitment to his career mirrored his loyalty to his family and his community.
As President of the Islamic Society of Baltimore (ISB) in the late 1990s, he extended his leadership to the spiritual and social fabric of the Muslim community, always guiding with compassion.
Golden Age Village: Community in Action
One of the shining examples of ISB’s outreach during his involvement is the Golden Age Village — a program supporting seniors aged 60 and above with opportunities to stay active, social, and cared for.
The Baltimore Sun featured this initiative in an article by Jonathan Pitts (Feb 6, 2023), praising its multicultural and diverse spirit. Seniors found joy in chess games, community meals, and shared transportation, while the program directly tackled a growing issue: loneliness, which affects nearly 25% of older adults living independently.
At its core, the Village reflects a timeless principle: “neighbor helping neighbor.” This ethos resonates deeply with Islamic values of compassion, service, and collective care — values Tufail Chaudhry championed in his leadership.
A Legacy Continued: Atif Chaudhry
The seeds of service and integrity bore fruit in the next generation. Tufail’s son, Atif Chaudhry, grew into a man of quiet determination and humility. His academic excellence led him to earn an MBA from the University of Baltimore and a Juris Doctor from the University of Maryland School of Law, becoming an active member of the Maryland Bar.
In March 2023, Atif was sworn in as Secretary of the Maryland Department of General Services, a historic achievement that reflects both his own resilience and the nurturing guidance of his family.
From Haji Sahib’s devotion in the Masjid, to Tufail’s lifelong service in healthcare and community leadership, to Atif’s rise in public service — the Chaudhry family stands as a role model of what it means to live with faith, humility, and purpose.
“And lower unto them the wing of submission and humility through mercy and say: 'My Lord! Bestow on them Thy Mercy even as they cherished me in childhood.'” (Qur’an 17:24)
This verse beautifully mirrors the Chaudhry legacy — three generations cherishing their elders, serving their community, and uplifting others with mercy and devotion.
Haji Sahib’s life of devotion found its most blessed conclusion in Ramadan of 1983. A man of strength and independence until his final days, he maintained his daily routines with dignity and faith. After completing Suhoor and offering the Fajr prayer one morning, he returned to rest and peacefully passed away in his sleep — while fasting. It was a departure that reflected his lifelong devotion, leaving behind a legacy of piety. May Allah ﷻ accept his fast, forgive his shortcomings, and grant him the highest place in Jannah al-Firdaus.
