Preface

By Syed Abid Husain, Author

This book began with a simple concern: memories often fade before they are preserved. Over the past year, I gathered social-media reflections honoring Maryland’s Muslim pioneers and community builders—stories that might otherwise disappear into the digital past. Shining Threads brings them together as a lasting record and a tribute to those who devoted their lives, resources, and energy to establishing Muslim communities across Maryland.

This history belongs not only to recognized founders and leaders, but also to the countless men and women who served quietly, without seeking recognition. The institutions and opportunities enjoyed today rest upon their faith, patience, character, and shared purpose.

Reflecting the broader Muslim experience of migration, settlement, education, professional achievement, civic engagement, and generational continuity, these pages preserve the legacy of a remarkable generation. If their stories deepen our appreciation for the sacrifices of those who came before us and inspire others to serve with sincerity, this effort will have fulfilled its purpose.

May their footsteps remain remembered, and may their light continue to guide those who follow.
