In the heart of Maryland’s growing Muslim community, one name stood as a silent pillar of dedication — Mohammed Ijaz Mufti. An architect by profession and a servant of the community by heart, his story is one of humble service, excellence, and faith.
Born with a love for design and structure, Mohammed Ijaz pursued a master’s degree in architectural engineering from Iowa State University. His career took him to Baltimore County Public Schools, where he became known for his meticulous planning, sharp technical acumen, and deep sense of responsibility. Yet beyond his professional life, it was his unwavering devotion to his community that defined him most.
For over three decades, Brother Mufti gave freely of his time and expertise to build the physical and spiritual foundations of Muslim life in Maryland. Whether it was the Islamic Society of Baltimore (ISB), Islamic Society of Annapolis (ISA), or Dar Al-Taqwa (DAT), his architectural fingerprints are etched into every brick and beam. From early design sketches to final construction details — gymnasiums, classrooms, funeral homes, and future senior housing projects — he shaped spaces that nurtured generations.
He served as ISB Vice President, managed complex building expansions, led fundraising logistics, and coordinated vendor and engineering projects with a calm, collected spirit. He was known for saying little and doing much — a man who “would quietly accept his assignments cheerfully and finish them gracefully.” Ramadan after Ramadan, he was there — setting up, cleaning up, ensuring every event ran seamlessly.
For Mohammed Mufti, service was worship. His architectural drawings were not just blueprints for walls and roofs, but for community growth, brotherhood, and faith. He never charged a penny for his volunteer work — his hands built for Allah’s house, and his heart found joy in it. In an age of self-promotion, he remained selfless, believing deeply in the Quranic reminder:
“And whatever good you do – indeed, Allah is All-Knowing of it.” Surah Al-Baqarah (2:215)
When he passed away during the days of COVID, the community mourned not just the loss of a skilled architect, but a man of rare humility and integrity. He left behind his loving wife, three daughters, and two sons — all continuing his legacy of service and faith.
In every corner of the Masajid he helped design, his presence lingers — in the light that enters through the high windows, in the echoes of prayer, and in the gratitude of a community that stands on the foundations he quietly built.
May Allah ﷻ grant Mohammed Ijaz Mufti the highest ranks in Jannatul Firdous, accept his decades of service, and bless his family to continue the noble path he paved — a life drawn in lines of devotion, measured in acts of kindness, and built upon the blueprint of faith.
