In every age, Allah appoints quiet servants whose devotion shapes the soul of the Ummah. Their names may not echo from pulpits, but their impact is carved into the hearts of communities. Among these were two brothers: Mohammed Iftekhar Ahmed Shami and Dr. Mohammed Ansar Ahmed Shami.
Iftekhar Shami – The Silent Sentinel
Each Sunday at the Islamic Society of Baltimore, Iftekhar Shami stood at the entrance—not for recognition, but for the sake of Allah. With a gentle smile and unwavering presence, he welcomed families, safeguarded children, and supported the growth of Islamic education. His commitment to Sunday school was total, his intention pure. When he returned to his Lord in 2022, the community grieved deeply, remembering a man whose quiet service had nurtured generations.
“And who is better in speech than one who calls to Allah, does righteousness, and says, ‘Indeed, I am of the Muslims.’” (Qur’an 41:33)
Dr. Ansar Shami – The Visionary Builder
In the 1970s, Dr. Ansar Shami arrived in Baltimore with a heart full of purpose. He helped lay the foundations of the Islamic Society of Baltimore, not merely as a structure, but as a prophetic space of learning and brotherhood. Later, he chose spiritual priorities over worldly comforts, relocating to Saudi Arabia to raise his family in faith. His journey continued through Raleigh NC and Columbia SC, where he established Masjid Noor ul Huda in 2003—another sanctuary born of sacrifice.
“Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their properties [in exchange] for that they will have Paradise…” (Qur’an 9:111)
Though their roles differed—one guarding a doorway, the other raising walls—their devotion was one. They envisioned communities anchored in Qur’an, Sunnah, and compassion. Their humility was their strength, their sincerity their offering.
“The masjids of Allah are only to be maintained by those who believe in Allah and the Last Day, establish prayer, give zakah, and fear none but Allah…” (Qur’an 9:18)
At Iftekhar’s burial, hundreds gathered—students, parents, teachers—bearing witness to a life of quiet excellence. Dr. Ansar stood by his brother’s grave, reciting Al-Fatiha, reflecting on decades of service rendered without applause.
When asked about community building, Dr. Ansar would speak not of grand plans, but of his brother’s simple acts. “He opened doors,” he’d say, “with such love that people felt Islam before they heard it.”
As Maghrib echoed through Masjid Noor ul Huda in Columbia SC and children departed Sunday school in Baltimore, the legacy of the Shami brothers lived on—in every prayer, every smile, every soul uplifted.
“Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds—the Most Merciful will appoint for them love.” (Qur’an 19:96)
