Legacy of Faith and Community: Dr. Mushtaq Khan

Dr. Mushtaq Khan, a visionary whose dedication helped shape the future of Muslims in America.

In the early 1970s, Baltimore was still adjusting to the growing diversity in its communities. Among its newcomers was Dr. Mushtaq Khan, a scientist, a thinker, and most importantly, a man with a vision. He had migrated to the United States in the 1960s, part of the first wave of Pakistani professionals—scientists, engineers, pharmacists, and medical doctors—who had been granted immigration visas.

Despite the demands of his work at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Dr. Khan never lost sight of a greater purpose. He saw a need for Muslims in Baltimore to have a space of their own—a place to worship, to gather, to build a future for generations to come.

His mission began in the halls of Johns Hopkins University, where he hosted community meetings in Shaffer Hall, drawing together those who shared his dream. They envisioned an Islamic center that would serve not just as a masjid, but as a beacon of learning, social connection, and spiritual guidance.

Through tireless efforts and the unwavering support of the community, Dr. Khan led fundraising initiatives, collecting donations to purchase a plot of land. That land would later become Masjid Al-Rahmah, a cornerstone of the Islamic Society of Baltimore (ISB). With faith and determination, he laid the foundation—both literally and figuratively—for a thriving community that has endured for more than fifty years.

Even as the masjid grew into a landmark of faith in the region, Dr. Khan continued his service at the NIH, contributing to scientific advancements for nearly four decades. When he finally left federal service after 38 years, he didn’t just leave behind a career—he left behind a lasting legacy. The masjid he helped establish remained, not just as a building, but as proof of what vision, perseverance, and devotion to community can accomplish, his contributions continue to serve the Muslim community, offering prayer spaces, educational programs, and a sense of belonging to all who walk through its doors. The story of Dr. Mushtaq Khan is not just the story of one man—it is the story of a community, built on faith, resilience, and an unshakable commitment to the future.

This is a powerful example of how leadership, sacrifice, and foresight shape communities for generations.
