Some people serve a community from the front, where everyone can see them. Others work quietly behind the walls, above the ceilings, and beneath the floors—keeping the place comfortable, safe, and functioning without ever asking to be recognized. Abaid Ur Rehman was one of those remarkable people.
For many years, he was the man behind nearly every heating and cooling installation and repair at Al-Rahmah Café. He also voluntarily assumed responsibility for much of the mechanical engineering work throughout Masjid Al-Rahmah and the school building. Whenever a system failed or an urgent problem arose, Abaid was only a phone call away. He responded at short notice, seeking neither payment nor personal gain. His reward was the satisfaction of serving the House of Allah and the community he loved.
Through his knowledge, generosity, and willingness to help, Abaid saved the community many thousands of dollars in repairs, equipment, and logistical expenses. Problems that might have become costly burdens were often resolved quietly through his skillful hands and generous heart. Many people enjoyed the comfort of the masjid without ever knowing the name of the man who helped keep its systems running.
But Abaid was remembered for more than his technical abilities. I enjoyed many humorous conversations with him. His sudden, witty, and cheerful responses could turn an ordinary exchange into a memorable moment. He had a natural way of encouraging others to continue speaking freely—without fear of judgment or preconceived notions. His joyful personality brought warmth to people, just as his hands brought warmth to the buildings he served.
Abaid also raised a beautiful family grounded in Islamic faith, values, and practice. His adventurous and energetic nature would never allow him to sit quietly while there was meaningful work to be done. He constantly explored new ideas, business opportunities, and ways to help others. In the early 2000s, he introduced a frozen halal-food processing business under his own brand. His creativity, determination, and understanding of the community’s needs helped the business become popular within a short time.
And now comes the painful farewell.
After a long and courageous struggle with illness, Abaid Ur Rehman returned to his Lord last night. His tools may now rest, and his familiar voice may no longer answer our calls, but the comfort he provided, the money he saved, the smiles he inspired, and the family he raised will continue to speak on his behalf.
Allah reminds children to honor their parents with humility, compassion, and prayer:
“And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, ‘My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up when I was small.’” Surah Al-Isra, 17:24
May his children and loved ones continue to remember him through this beautiful du‘a and through lives that reflect the faith and values he placed in their hearts.
May Allah forgive Abaid Ur Rehman, shower him with boundless mercy, and fill his grave with light. May every repair he completed, every hardship he removed, every dollar he saved for the masjid, and every smile he brought to another person become a continuing charity in his record.
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji‘un.
Indeed, we belong to Allah, and to Him we shall return.
