Author’s Preface

by Syed Abid Husain

Community Historian; Former Council Member and Founding Administrator, Islamic Society of Baltimore (ISB)

This book chronicles the journey of ISB from its earliest gatherings in 1967 through 2026.

Over nearly six decades, Muslim communities in Maryland have experienced growth, challenge, renewal, and transition. What began with small gatherings and modest resources gradually developed into established institutions, schools, civic initiatives, and service networks. In recent years, leadership has steadily passed from the first generation of immigrants — from diverse regions of the world and from within the United States — to those raised in America, prepared to carry the responsibility forward. This transition reflects continuity, maturity, and the foresight of those who planted the earliest seeds.

I undertook this work because the story of these decades deserved to be recorded. Not only the founders whose names are widely known, but also the many men and women who served quietly — offering time, skill, resources, and youthful energy without expectation of recognition. Communities are not sustained by structure alone; they endure through character, patience, and shared effort. The achievements visible today rest upon that steady foundation.

My own life has intersected with this journey, allowing me to witness its unfolding from within. Over the years, I listened, interviewed, reviewed documents, and gathered reflections from elders and community members. What emerged was not simply a collection of institutional records, but the portrait of a generation.

I am grateful to the elders and community members who shared their memories and entrusted their stories. Any shortcomings in this work are mine alone.

If these pages help readers value institutional memory, understand the sacrifices that preceded them, and feel inspired to serve with sincerity, then this effort will have meaning.

This is not only a history of organizations. It is the story of people — a generation that built with faith, endured with patience, and entrusted the future to those who follow. May their footsteps remain remembered.
