Translator’s and Author’s Note

This is a faithful English rendering and narrative expansion of material assembled for the Urdu edition. The source material includes a scanned historical work, and a few proper names were faint or typographically unclear; where the intended wording was uncertain, this edition avoids invention on matters of fact and follows the most likely reading.

The life of Haji Syed Sajjad Husain deserved to be placed before the public rather than allowed to disappear into family memory alone. Dr. Sajid Husain spent years assembling his own recollections, family records, photographs, correspondence, and whatever documentary material could still be located — the raw material of a life that no archive was kept. This English narrative continues that work for readers who do not read Urdu, and for a family now scattered across three continents who might otherwise lose the story piece by piece with each passing generation.

The value of this book lies not merely in preserving the memory of one man but in recalling a generation whose public service, social concern, and sacrifice form part of the larger history of the freedom struggle and the founding of Pakistan. It is hoped that this effort will encourage others to preserve the stories of similarly forgotten workers of the movement — the clerks, the small contractors, the local editors, the men who fed and housed the famous without ever standing beside them for a photograph.
