Institutions & Masajid

The Places Communities Built Together

Maryland’s masajid and Islamic institutions are more than buildings. They are places where generations prayed, learned, married, mourned, celebrated, volunteered, raised children, welcomed newcomers, and served their neighbors.

Some began with a handful of people gathering in private homes or rented rooms. Others developed into large campuses serving thousands.

Behind each institution are stories of sacrifice. There were families who donated, volunteers who worked after their regular jobs, teachers who educated children, leaders who navigated difficult decisions, and community members who contributed whatever they could.

Our goal is to preserve not only when an institution was established, but also why it was created, who helped build it, whom it served, and how it contributed to Maryland.
